The Short Answer
Get 16GB. That's it. You can stop reading here if you want.
But if you want to understand why โ and when 8GB or 32GB makes sense โ read on. It'll take 3 minutes and save you from a regrettable purchase.
Why 8GB is a Bad Idea in 2026
Chrome with 10 tabs open eats 4-6GB on its own. Add Spotify, a couple of Office documents, and a video call โ you're already pushing 8GB to its limit. Your laptop starts swapping data to the slower SSD, everything slows down, and you spend the next 3 years annoyed at your computer.
8GB was fine in 2020. It's not fine in 2026. Don't buy it if you can avoid it.
The one exception: the MacBook Neo. Apple's unified memory architecture makes 8GB perform more like 12GB on Windows. It's still tight, but manageable for light use.
16GB โ The Right Choice for 90% of People
Students, remote workers, developers doing everyday coding, content creators, gamers โ 16GB handles all of it comfortably. You can have 30 browser tabs, Slack, Spotify, and a Zoom call running simultaneously without breaking a sweat.
The MacBook Air M5 now comes with 16GB standard. It's the right call. If you're buying any laptop in 2026 and it has 8GB, either upgrade to 16GB or buy a different laptop.
When You Actually Need 32GB
Be honest with yourself here. 32GB is for:
- 4K video editing in Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve with effects layers
- Running Docker containers or VMs simultaneously
- Machine learning and AI development locally
- Heavy 3D work in Blender, Cinema 4D, or CAD software
If you edit 1080p YouTube videos, code websites, or do graphic design โ 16GB is enough. Don't pay $200 extra for RAM you won't use.
The Apple Exception โ Read This if You're Buying a Mac
Apple Silicon Macs use unified memory โ the CPU and GPU share the same RAM pool. This makes Apple's 16GB genuinely equivalent to about 24GB on a comparable Windows laptop in real-world usage.
So if you're comparing a 16GB MacBook to a 16GB Windows laptop, the MacBook will handle heavier workloads more comfortably. This is why even light video editors can get away with 16GB on a Mac but might want 32GB on Windows.
Quick Reference
Bottom Line
Don't buy 8GB in 2026 โ it'll feel slow within two years. 16GB covers 90% of users well. Only go to 32GB if you genuinely need it for the specific tasks above.
