At $599, it's the first Mac that directly competes with mainstream Windows laptops on price, and it does so without gutting what makes a Mac special.

This is a landmark product. Not because it's Apple's best laptop — it isn't — but because it brings the Mac to millions of people who previously couldn't justify the price.

Performance That Surprises

The A18 Pro chip inside the MacBook Neo is the same chip that powered the iPhone 16 Pro. That might sound like a step down from the M-series chips in MacBook Air and Pro, but in practice the performance gap is smaller than you'd expect for everyday tasks. The lack of True Tone — which automatically adjusts color temperature based on ambient lighting — is a noticeable omission compared to more expensive Macs, but most users won't miss it.

Design and Colors

The MacBook Neo uses the same aluminum unibody design language as the rest of the Mac lineup. It's available in four colors — Silver, Blush, Citrus, and Indigo — with color-matched keyboards on each. At 2.7 lbs it's heavier than the 2.7-pound spec might suggest (it's the same weight as the MacBook Air) but it's genuinely portable.

One detail worth noting: the bezels are uniform and there's no notch, making this the first notchless MacBook since 2020. It's a clean, modern look.

The Tradeoffs

Three compromises stand out. First — no backlit keyboard. In 2026, on any laptop at any price, this is a real miss. The keys are white which helps visibility in dim rooms, but it's not the same. Second — the right USB-C port runs at USB 2 speeds, which is very slow for file transfers. Only the left port supports USB 3 and DisplayPort. The MacBook Neo is the obvious choice for students, first-time Mac buyers, and anyone who does everyday computing tasks and values battery life, silence, and the Mac ecosystem. It's not the right choice for power users, video editors, or anyone who needs serious I/O.

At $599 it's not just a good budget laptop — it's a good laptop, full stop. The fact that it costs $400 less than a MacBook Air is almost secondary.
