The Best Laptop in the World, Again

Apple has a habit of taking something that's already the best and making it measurably better. The MacBook Air M5 follows that pattern exactly. It doesn't look different from the M4. It doesn't have a new display. But under the hood, it's a genuinely significant upgrade — and Apple fixed the two biggest complaints about the previous model in one move: 16GB RAM is now standard, and storage starts at 512GB.

At $1,099, it's $100 more than the M4 launched at. That's worth it.

M5 Performance — What's Actually Better

The M5 chip is built on TSMC's 3nm process with Neural Accelerators in each GPU core. The headline numbers from Apple: 28% faster memory bandwidth (153GB/s vs M4's 120GB/s), 4x faster AI task performance vs M4, and 50% better gaming performance vs the M4 Air.

In real-world benchmarks, the M5 Air posts Geekbench single-core scores around 4,100 and multi-core around 16,000 — a meaningful 15% jump over the M4. For everyday tasks — web browsing, writing, video calls, spreadsheets — you won't notice much difference from M4. Where you will notice the difference: opening large Final Cut projects, running AI models locally, doing 3D work in Blender, and gaming.

The memory bandwidth improvement is the most underrated spec. It means apps feel snappier, especially when multitasking with many apps open.

16GB RAM — Finally

Apple finally killed the 8GB base MacBook Air. The M5 starts with 16GB of unified memory, which is where the M4 Air should have started. This means no more awkward conversations about whether 8GB is "enough" — it is now, because it's 16GB.

For most users, 16GB is plenty. You can have 30+ Chrome tabs, Slack, Spotify, Figma, and a video call all running simultaneously without slowdowns. The 24GB and 32GB upgrade options are for power users who run heavy AI models or work with large video files.

Battery Life — Still the Best

Apple rates the M5 Air at 18 hours of wireless web browsing. Our testing confirmed this is accurate for mixed use — about 14-16 hours of real work including video calls, heavy browser use, and occasional video editing. That's enough for two full workdays between charges for most people.

The fanless design plays a role here. Without a fan spinning up under load, there's no power wasted on cooling. The M5's efficiency improvements over M4 also mean the larger 52.6Wh battery goes even further.

Wi-Fi 7 via Apple's N1 Chip

Apple included its custom N1 wireless chip, the same one in the iPhone 16 Pro. This brings Wi-Fi 7 (theoretical 46Gbps) and Bluetooth 6 to the Air. In practice, Wi-Fi 7 requires a Wi-Fi 7 router to see benefits — but if you have one, file transfers and streaming are noticeably faster. Bluetooth 6 improves connection reliability and reduces audio latency.

Display — Good But Not Great

The 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display at 2560×1664 is sharp, color accurate, and bright at 500 nits. P3 wide color gamut makes photos and videos look excellent. What it isn't: OLED, 120Hz, or nano-texture. Apple is saving OLED for the MacBook Pro lineup, likely in late 2026 or 2027. For most users, this display is more than good enough. For photographers and video editors who need perfect blacks and 120Hz, the MacBook Pro is the right choice.

Design and Colors

Same design as M2, M3, and M4 — thin aluminum unibody, flat lid, no notch on the 13-inch. The new Sky Blue color is the standout addition, a soft muted blue that looks sophisticated rather than loud. Midnight, Starlight, and Silver return. At 2.7 lbs and 11.3mm thin, it's genuinely portable — the kind of laptop you forget is in your bag.

Should You Upgrade?

From M1 or M2 — yes, upgrade. The performance difference is large, and the 16GB RAM standard makes it a much better machine for the next five years. From M3 — upgrade if AI performance matters to you, otherwise wait for M6. From M4 — don't bother. The gains are real but not worth $1,099 when you already have a great machine.

For everyone else — students, professionals, switchers from Windows — the MacBook Air M5 is simply the best laptop you can buy. Nothing else comes close at this price.
