The honest answer: save up for the MacBook Air M5. At $1,049 it's the best laptop for students — period. If you genuinely can't afford it, the MacBook Neo at $599 is excellent. Everything in between is a compromise.

Best Budget Pick — MacBook Neo ($599)
Apple's cheapest laptop ever is genuinely good. A18 Pro chip, 16 hours battery, completely silent — for $599. The tradeoffs are real: no backlit keyboard, only 8GB RAM, limited ports.
For writing essays, attending Zoom classes, browsing research, and light coding — the Neo handles it all without complaint. If your major is humanities, business, or general studies, this might be all you need.

For Gamers — ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 ($1,799)
If gaming is serious and non-negotiable, the Zephyrus G16 is the only gaming laptop worth buying in 2026. RTX 5080, 240Hz OLED, surprisingly good battery for a gaming machine. Yes it's $1,799. Yes it's worth it if gaming genuinely matters to you.
For students who game occasionally — buy the MacBook Air M5 instead. It handles casual gaming fine and serves your academic work better.
What About Chromebooks?
Skip them. The MacBook Neo at $599 is better in every measurable way — more capable, better build quality, longer lifespan. Unless your school specifically requires Chrome OS, there's no reason to buy a Chromebook in 2026.
